Two weeks into a new job at Insignis Cash in London, as a backend engineer on the PayTech team, after three years at Smedley Group Advanced Technology. PayTech covers payments, and motorsport to payments is an unfamiliar domain, chosen deliberately. The thing I've argued for in most of what I write, that the discipline matters more than the domain, is now something I get to test properly.
So far that has mostly meant learning. Banking is a regulated business, and a good part of the first fortnight has gone on reading my way into the rules that shape what the software is allowed to do. The rest has been learning the domain by doing the work: building new features, contributing to technical designs, and reviewing other people's pull requests.
Finished a BSc in Computer Science at UEA this summer, with a dissertation on agile and lean methodologies for deploying software in operational start-up contexts: what actually works, what doesn't, and where the conventional wisdom breaks down. Four of the essays in the archive come out of it. This is also the first time I've worked inside the ceremonies that dissertation was about. Even the daily standup is new to me.
Over the summer two client sites went live, New Vision Packaging and Corby United, and LapDelta shipped.
